We would like to thank everyone who attended the DSAEP picnic last Saturday. It was a perfect Spring afternoon for a picnic. Donations

The Down Syndrome Association of El Paso was established in 2007. The primary purpose of our organization is to provide support and education to families who have children with Down Syndrome. The period following the diagnosis of Down Syndrome is a difficult period filled with confusion and uncertainty. Our goal is to help parents look beyond the diagnosis and help them see the love, the joys and the delight that children with Down Syndrome can bring into their lives. To accomplish our goals, we are in need of donations. We plan to distribute informational packages to all the hospitals in El Paso. We plan to provide the information in a DSAEP tote bag filled with information on Down Syndrome and what they can expect in the years to come. We would be very appreciative of your generosity in providing a donation to fund our program this year. DSAEP is a Non-Profit Organization.

Music From The Heart

DSAEP was proud to present “Music from the Heart” for all our special members. ”Music from the Heart” was a 2-hour bilingual performance and interactive activity facilitated by Nancy Green. The workshop was a wonderful interactive musical event for all the kids and parents alike.

The workshop was a demonstration of various percussion and wind instruments (drums, shakers, bells, flutes) using the Visual Thinking Skills (VTS) technique. It included interactive activity where participants create a collage then write their impressions of the images they assembled and pasted on to a poster board to be framed and displayed on site

The workshop also included an interactive activity during which participants play musical chairs and create a musical ensemble that performs before the rest of the participants. Go to the following link for pictures of the workshop.

ARD Preparation Workshop

On February 19th, DSAEP will host a ARD preparation workshop by Advocacy Inc. The workshop is designed for parents who have a child with Down syndrome who is entering or currently attending elementary school. The workshop will be followed by a group discussion to share ideas, ask questions, and share experiences. The workshop provides information and resources to empower families as they prepare for their child’s ARD. The goal of Advocacy Inc is to advocate on behalf of people with disabilities for their rights as individuals. The ultimate goal is to realize the complete acceptance and inclusion of individuals with Down Syndrome into all aspects of the classroom. The workshop will be held at the Hall behind Holy Spirit Episcapol Church at 10500 Kenworthy (same location as the Christmas Party).

Second Annual DSAEP Christmas Party

The Second Annual DSAEP Christmas Party was held on Saturday, December 17th at the Loya Family YMCA. It was a special holiday event for the entire family and we had over 170 in attendance at the party and everyone had a great time. There was plenty of food, games, great music. Santa Clause even made an appearance and took pictures and handed gifts to all our special boys and girls.

The DSAEP would like to thank Peter Piper Pizza & PF Chang’s China Bistro for donating the food for our special Holiday Event. We would also like to thank the Fred Loya Family YMCA for providing the venue for the Party and a special Thanks to Gilbert Urrutia for assisting in the planing of our Second Annual Christmas Party.
